Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band

How it works:

The laparoscopic adjustable gastric band restricts the stomach capacity allowing you to lose weight and maintain weight loss.

Suitable for:

Patients with a severe weight problem who need a long term solution.

Patients with a BMI of over 40 or with a BMI of 35-40 and weight related health problems such as diabetes.

Pre-op treatment:

Initial consultation with Consultant Surgeon

Pre-assessment by Dietician and Specialist Nurse

Full assessment by Consultant Anaesthetist

If appropriate, an appointment with our Clinical Psychologist

Procedure:

This is a laparoscopic (key-hole) procedure

A silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch. This pouch restricts the capacity of the stomach allowing you to eat just small amounts before feeling full

Anaesthetic:

A general anaesthetic

Operating time:

This is a 40/80 minute laparoscopic (key-hole) procedure

Overnight stay:

Routine stay of one night after surgery

Recovery time:

Patients able to drink water 2-3 hours after the procedure

How long before achieving results:

Patients start to lose weight after the first laparoscopic gastric band adjustment at 8 weeks

Post op:

Over a two week period, patients are able to enjoy normal food, just less of it

Risks:
